Location: Virtual, regular travel required with a preference for a NY, MA or VA homebase.

 

Job Description

The Frontline and Organizing Staff Director is responsible for the implementation of the Mothers Out Front community organizing framework across Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia, and in additional states as we expand. They are responsible for supporting staff and volunteers in achieving our mission to ensure a just transition away from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy. Organizing in frontline communities, those communities who are experiencing the direct impact of climate change and/or the fossil fuel industry, is a strategic priority for our organization and an important aspect of this job. Key responsibilities include managing State Lead Organizers (in MA, NY, and VA), developing and implementing a national frontline organizing strategy, and providing tools, training, and support to the organization’s ongoing goals of building a diverse movement.

About Mothers Out Front

Mothers Out Front is building a diverse national movement of mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers dedicated to convincing elected officials and business leaders to work aggressively for a swift, complete, and just transition away from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy. Our goal is simple: to enable mothers to take active leadership in protecting their children, by providing the structure, training, and tools for them to work together on campaigns in their communities and at the statewide level. We are a volunteer-led, national organization, with an annual operating budget of $1.2M and 15 staff working in 3 states. Founded in 2013, the organization has experienced rapid growth and has plans for continued expansion.

 

Responsibilities

The Frontline and Organizing Staff Director is a key leadership role within Mothers Out Front whose responsibilities include the following:

Implementation of the Mothers Out Front Organizing Framework

  • Supervising, coaching, and/or supporting the Mothers Out Front Lead Organizers in New York, Massachusetts and Virginia, and additional states as the organization grows

  • Working closely with the National Leadership Team, Director of Learning and New State Expansion, and Executive Director to ensure that organizers have the tools, training, and coaching that they need and to make strategic decisions about resource allocations and state-level and national organizing campaigns

Development and Implementation of a National Frontline Organizing Strategy

  • Supporting the work of the National Leadership Team and State Leadership Teams in developing a national frontline organizing strategy and identifying new organizing opportunities in frontline communities

  • Facilitating outreach and relationship-building in frontline communities and building capacity within Mothers Out Front for this work

Supporting a Diverse Movement

  • Collaborating with Mothers Out Front volunteer teams and staff to develop communications materials, trainings, and strategy that facilitate a culture of learning and skill-building around diversity, inclusion, and equity

  • Supporting the leadership of an increasingly diverse constituency of Mothers Out Front leaders and allies

Management and Supervision

  • Supervising Lead Organizers so that each person is clear about their role and how they are expected to perform it, receives feedback on performance through regular check-ins and more formal performance evaluations, and is enabled, empowered and accountable to achieve results.

  • Communicating clearly with Lead Organizers about what's going on in Mothers Out Front.  Ensure team has SMART goals to align themselves around a common purpose.

  • Supporting each person to take care of their personal needs and achieve their fullest potential.

  • Encouraging each person to learn and grow through both challenging work assignments and professional development.

 

Qualifications:

  • Strong relationship-building skills

  • Strong management skills

  • Experience with community organizing, campaign and strategy development and implementation

  • Demonstrated success in moving people into campaigns

  • Multi-cultural competencies, and demonstrated ability to work with people from a variety of ethnic, racial, socio-economic, educational, linguistic, and religious backgrounds, as well as people of various physical abilities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and generations

  • Experience working effectively with community groups and volunteers

  • Experience with leadership development and coaching

  • An understanding of and commitment to movement building

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills with demonstrated follow through on tasks; multi-project/multi-task orientation

  • Experience and passion for social and environmental justice, and commitment to addressing climate change

  • Bi/multi-lingual preferred (especially Spanish)
