Earlier this month the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management proposed a much-anticipated lease sale of 81,000 acres of ocean off Long Beach for offshore wind development. The area is large enough to support a 700-800 MW offshore wind project which, if developed, would be the first utility-scale offshore wind project in North America! This is a huge step forward for offshore wind in New York, and is a real testament to the momentum we're building.
Here's why this matters for us: on June 29th, BOEM is having a stakeholder meeting in NYC to go over the environmental assessment that was released along with the lease notice, as well as to solicit comments from New York stakeholders.
This is a critical opportunity to show both federal and state officials that we support them moving forward with offshore wind in NY, and to make sure wind advocates capture the day (and not our opponents)!
So we're rallying in Bryant Park at 4:45pm, and then marching over to the stakeholder meeting to voice our support for moving full steam ahead with OSW.
