Please gather in Rochester, Federal Building at 100 State Street at 4PM. We will reflect on the Lac-Megantic derailment and pay tribute to the 47 killed on this day three years ago.
Then we will discuss the derailment and explosion on June 3, 2016 in Mosier Oregon which resulted in the evacuation of the town and nearby school ,the destruction of the the towns water system and the contamination of the Columbia River.
Despite calls from the Govenors of Oregon and Washington and US Representatives for a moratorium on the transport of oil trains due to safety and environmental concerns, the UP Railway Company has resumed their transport saying the are required to do so due to Federal Railway Regulations. Unfortunately those regulations do not require that the Bakken oil be treated to reduce its volatility before transport.
Our Action will include educating the press, passing pedestrians and motorists of the immense danger Rochester and Monroe County face to to our confluence with the rails and the multiplicity of the oil trains that travel through our community each day. The event should end about 5:30 PM.
