We are excited to get Mothers Out Front started in California. While California leads the country on many environmental issues, it is the 3rd largest producer of oil and gas in the U.S. We saw the consequences of that last fall when the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility leaked a devastating amount of methane and other gasses. Southern California still has the worst air quality in the nation, due in part to the vast oil and gas operations that have been part of the area for over a hundred years. Add to that the boom in fracking, which uses so much of our precious fresh water, and you realize we have quite a lot of work to do.
Our first goal is to establish and grow local teams of mothers by hosting house parties. Our first parties have been in Orange County in Tustin and Newport Beach. We are researching ways households can make the switch to clean energy and deciding where to focus our energy first. We have written letters opposing new natural gas infrastructure and will be working with our local leaders on a swift and just transition to renewable energy.
We are so inspired by what moms have achieved in Massachusetts, New York and Virginia and are excited to continue that great work here in California! Please reach out if you are interested in joining us!
