We need bold climate policy!

Creating that healthy future for our kids doesn’t just mean investing in green technology and good-paying jobs in the clean energy sector, we need to focus on policy that invests in the communities that have been most affected by fossil fuel emissions and climate change.

This is a once in a generation opportunity to remake our economy and build a future for our children that is livable from air and water quality to safe schools and healthy communities.

We must work together to convince elected officials at all levels of our government, that climate policy must be bold, comprehensive, and that it must center around environmental justice.

What can we do right now?  Urge our elected officials to make climate policy a priority.

While the American Jobs Plan is a great start, we can go further.  We need bold, innovative policy to create a livable climate for our kids.

American Jobs Plan

As a response to Covid-19, the government passed short-term emergency spending/stimulus plans in an effort to bolster a spiraling economy. Those plans did not address long-term solutions and continued to prop up a polluting economy.

The Biden Administration has introduced a $2.3 trillion infrastructure plan that represents the largest investment in the infrastructure and jobs sectors since WWII. This plan is focused on reimagining and rebuilding an economy that investment is the American Jobs Plan.

How will this plan promote bold, climate policy?

Invest in Infrastructure

  • Creation of a network for charging electric vehicles, including the installation of 500,000 EV charging stations.
  • Renewal of the electric grid
  • Provide clean drinking water by replacing lead pipes and service lines, which are known to cause serious health problems, in water systems nationwide.
  • Update the U.S. power grid so it’s more efficient and resilient during natural disasters. This effort includes plugging old oil and gas wells and cleaning up abandoned mines.
  • It also aims to establish a Civilian Climate Corps to create jobs relating to environmental conservation.

Modernize Our Buildings

  • Modernize public schools and community colleges by upgrading and building new facilities.
  • Modernize Veterans Affairs hospitals and federal buildings by refurbishing them with a focus on energy efficiency.

Begins to Address Environmental Racism

  • Communities of color, Indigenous communities, and low-income communities face disproportionate burdens from interlocking crises: climate catastrophe, COVID-19, an economic recession, and deep racial injustice. Government has historically under-invested in these communities.
  • How this plan will help: It targets 40% of the benefits from investments in climate and infrastructure to disadvantaged communities, and addresses the cumulative impacts of pollution in frontline communities.

Create Jobs

  • Invest in research and development in technology fields, climate science and innovation to establish the U.S. as a leader in these areas. This includes a $10 billion investment for research and development at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), which would provide graduate fellowships and pre-college programs.
  • Funding to create jobs and prevent job losses caused by potential future pandemics. It also focuses on creating jobs manufacturing items that would be purchased by the federal government, including electric vehicles. In addition, Biden wants to develop a Community Revitalization Fund to establish regional innovation hubs.
