Why am I involved in Mothers Out Front? It's simple. Climate change affects just about all facets of our lives and the lives of our children: the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe and extreme weather leading to natural disasters just to name a few.
My family was one of many on the Lower East Side of Manhattan NY who were affected by Hurricane Sandy in October of 2012. We were left without heat, hot water, and electricity for a week. While we were devastated during the entire ordeal, we consider ourselves lucky as many families and individuals lost their homes and many businesses were destroyed.
I was recently invited to and attended a community meeting hosted by Mothers Out Front in collaboration with El Puente in Brooklyn NY. I was quickly impressed and inspired by the work Mothers Out Front has is done in only three years and how quickly they have grown. I was super excited to know that mothers from all over with the same concerns about the environment that I have are coming together to make a difference. I felt a sense of empowerment at that meeting as they listed the answers to the question "why mothers?" and I left that meeting with no doubt in my mind that real change will come from mothers organizing and being heard.
