Mothers Out Front: Moms and Organizers Frustrated by Failures at COP28

Halfway through the global summit, commitments have fallen woefully short

BOSTON (December 6, 2023) – Despite its role as the largest global gathering of climate expertise, this year’s United Nations climate summit – COP28 – has appalled climate scientists, organizers, and activists alike. The clear role of the fossil fuel lobby – as evidenced by comments from COP28 President, oil executive Sultan Al Jaber – and lack of U.S. leaders in attendance has frustrated many climate activists.

“Mothers and caregivers across the country are angry and fed up with the snail’s pace of the world’s progress on climate,” said Beth Shipp, Executive Director of Mothers Out Front. “If we want to have a livable planet for our children, we must make the transition to clean and renewable energy as soon as possible. If oil executives continue interfering with that progress, we need to make sure our nation’s leaders are speaking out and prepared to overcome any obstacles that stand in our way to a sustainable climate future.”

President Biden’s failure to attend COP28 has also been top of mind for Mothers Out Front’s organizers on the ground.

“It is a huge disappointment that President Biden is not in attendance at COP28,” said Sandy Stratton-Gonzalez, a Mothers Out Front Organizer in Dutchess County, NY. “This year, big gas and oil have hijacked the conference. I want to see the United States take a leadership role in countering the false narratives of the fossil fuel sector. I want my President and my government to work harder to secure a sustainable future for our children and grandchildren. Sadly, our leadership is missing in action.”
