We will line the street in front of the Federal Building to show our objection to the continued presence of explosive Bakken crude oil trains in Rochester.
Last Friday, another train derailment and explosion occurred in Mosier, Oregon. This is the 10th explosive derailment that has occurred since July of 2013, when a train carrying explosive Bakken crude oil from North Dakota derailed causing the deaths of 47 people in Lac Megantic, Quebec.
Rochester is a thoroughfare for Bakken crude oil; this same disaster could happen here. A daily average of over 200 Bakken oil tanker rail cars race through our city - near schools, playgrounds, community centers, residences, businesses, and sensitive waterways. The National Transportation Safety Board has concluded these unit trains of Bakken crude oil are “an unacceptable public risk.”
Mothers Out Front of Rochester and Monroe County has been researching the dangers of fracked Bakken crude oil for over a year and has recently presented to School Boards and government officials about the risk and what can be done. We are calling currently on our national representatives for a national ban on transporting this oil by rail.
Yet another explosive derailment has shown the extreme immediate danger posed by transporting volatile fracked Bakken crude oil. The people of Rochester cannot tolerate this risk any longer when there are safer and cleaner energy sources available. On Tuesday, we make that case to our neighbors and representatives.
