Mothers Out Front KC Monthly General Meetings (4th Monday of every month)

Join Mothers Out Front Kansas City for their monthly general meeting. Learn how we are building a powerful grassroots movement to ensure a swift, complete, and just transition away from fossil fuels and towards clean, renewable energy. Our goal is to pressure Kansas City area political, business, and economic institutions to align their priorities and actions with the reality of climate change and its impacts. Our monthly general meetings are a great time to learn more about our organization and the work we are doing to support a liveable climate for the kids of Kansas City. Together we can create a healthy climate today and a livable future for all children.

—————-

Join us this month of Earth Day as we discuss the impacts of gas leaks in our neighborhoods (and the earth!) and our efforts to get gas companies to increase transparency around gas leaks.

Gas leaks are primarily methane and are an invisible problem that contribute to respiratory illness, kill trees and landscaping, and accelerate climate change. But right now we have no idea where leaks are or when they will be fixed because the information is not made public.

In addition, there may be opportunities to better coordinate with the City when a street needs to be torn up to repair a leak to save public dollars.

Per our request, the Missouri Public Service Commission has opened a case (GW-2021-0272) to explore having gas companies publish a map of known gas leaks on their websites, as other states have done, along with information about how big the leak is and what the plan is to fix the leak. Neighborhood associations in our region have overwhelmingly  said they would like to have this information.

Joining us will be Boston University Earth & Environment Professor Nathan Phillips, who has studied the impact of gas leaks in Boston for years and been a leading advocate for policy reform to reduce the impact of gas leaks.

Have you experienced a gas leak in your neighborhood? If so, we hope you will join us to share your story. If you cannot make it but have experienced a gas leak in your neighborhood, please share your story with us here. We will submit stories to the Public Service Commission.
