August 28, 2018 - Today is a historic day!! This evening, in a bipartisan vote, the California state Assembly passed Senate Bill 100. Once Governor Brown signs it into law next month, the fifth largest economy in the world will be on track to be powered entirely with clean electricity by 2045!
Make no mistake, this is a victory of the people over the fossil fuel industry.SB 100 was heavily opposed by PG&E and the Western States Petroleum Association, the most influential lobby in Sacramento. Yet their money was drowned out in a sea of petitions, postcards, calls, tweets, and lobby visits from a grassroots coalition of consumers, people of faith, environmental justice advocates, labor unions, scientists--and moms!
Our Mothers Out Front teams in San Jose, San Francisco and most recently Woodland together collected nearly 1000 hand-signed postcards from constituents and over 6,800 petition signaturesasking Assemblymembers to pass SB 100. Together with allies like 350 Silicon Valley and 350 Bay Area, we made dozens of lobby visits to local Assemblymembers, spoke up at hearings, published an op-ed, tweeted, and showed up in force at 100% Clean Energy Lobby Day in Sacramento in June. When moms speak, politicians listen!
We couldn't have done this without you! Thank you for calling, tweeting, signing postcards & petitions, and lobbying with us. Every action you took made a difference, as the vote came down to the wire. We're especially gratefulthat San Francisco Bay Area Assemblymembers Marc Berman, David Chiu, Ash Kalra, Mark Stone and Phil Tingsigned on as co-authors, as did Senators Jim Beall and Bob Wieckowski. We were pleased that their local colleagues Assemblymembers Evan Low and Kansen Chujoined them in voting yes, and delighted that Assemblymember Evan Lowpublished an op-edwith Carl Guardino in favor of SB 100 the morning of the vote.
So, let's take a moment to celebrate, and then roll up our sleeves--actually, put on our marching shoes! On Saturday, September 8th, thousands of people and families just like yours will march in San Francisco for Climate, Jobs & Justice--showing world leaders gathering the following week at a global climate conference that we want them to take bold action to protect our planet and our people, especially our children.
Mothers Out Front is heading up the Families Contingent--and we hope you'll join us! RSVP with Mothers Out Front nowto secure a beautiful commemorative t-shirt (while supplies last) and grab a spot on one of the charter buses coming from all parts of the state. A new bus was just added from San Jose & Palo Altofor people who'd like to march with our Mothers Out Front group.
