Report a Gas Leak

CALL 1-800-233-5325

Suspect a gas leak? Call National Grid immediately.

Smell gas? Never assume that someone else has already reported a suspected leak. Why? Leaking methane gas causes air pollution, drives climate change, kills trees, and can pose an explosion hazard. Calling in the leak will help keep our community safe! Call 1-800-233-5325 immediately if you:

  • Smell gas or suspect a gas leak.
  • See a white cloud, mist, fog or bubbles in standing water.
  • Notice dead vegetation that does not have a cause to be there.
  • Notice an odor other than natural gas that is irritating to your eyes, nose and/or throat.

If you smell gas inside your home, go outside immediately and call 1-800-233-5325 or 911. To learn the other signs of a gas emergency inside your home, visit Report a Gas Emergency on the National Grid website.

FAQ

What if the gas leak already appears on the HEET Gas Leak Map?

Call it in anyway! The gas leak may have grown larger and more dangerous since it was first reported. The rule is simple, if you can smell gas, call National Grid immediately. Assistance is available 24 hours a day, every day.

What does a gas leak smell like?

Most people describe the smell as rotten eggs. Methane gas is naturally tasteless, colorless, and odorless, but gas utilities add mercaptan, a sulfur-smelling chemical, to natural gas to help customers recognize leaks. It smells bad for a good reason – gas leaks are dangerous!
