(San Jose, CA) This week’s horrific mass shooting in San Jose, which resulted in the loss of nine innocent lives, is devastating and unacceptable. The men killed were fathers, sons, husbands, brothers, friends and neighbors—and essential union workers providing vital public transit services. As mothers who are working to create a just and livable future where all children can prosper, we are appalled that our society has still not prioritized that future by enacting common sense gun safety legislation to keep our kids and our family members safe. We urge our elected officials, especially those in Congress, to take immediate and concrete action to help prevent future senseless loss of life.

Our hearts are with the families and friends who lost a loved one, the Amalgamated Transit Union and SEIU families, the VTA community, and all the communities impacted. Those who are struggling to process what happened can seek support from the Crisis Hotline, available 24/7, at 1-855-278.4204. Donations to support the families of the victims can be made to the VTA Victim’s Fund here or to the Amalgamated Transit Union Disaster Relief Fund here.
