Now that the federal administration has turned its back on the environment, many of us are wondering what we can do to protect our precious climate. Research shows that one of the most powerful ways to make a difference is by organizing together to influence our local decision-makers (like mayors, city council members, etc.). Wins on the local level in turn build power for eventual wins on the state and national level.
Please join us on Monday, March 20th for a fun, empowering, hands-on multimedia workshop that will explore various ways to make a local impact. After discussing why local matters now more than ever, we will give a mini-training and hands-on practice in key skills for influencing local leaders. We’ll use the Mothers Out Front - South Bay team’s campaign to get the San Jose City Council to adopt Community Choice Energy as a case study.
- Writing a Letter to the Editor - a LTE is one of the best ways to reach a wide audience and generate community discussion. Learn the what, why, when, and hows of getting a LTE published.
- Meeting with Local Government Officials - while we may not have much sway in the federal government, our local leaders are much more likely to listen when a number of their constituents speak up. In this section we will share strategies and suggestions for developing a relationship with your local government official and how to organize an effective meeting.
- Telling Your Story (personal narrative) - whether just to share with friends and family or to use as a testimony at City Hall, telling people why something matters to us is one of the most powerful tools we have to connect and influence. Learn how to craft a succinct and impactful story on an issue that matters to you.
This meeting is relevant for everyone wanting to make a difference at a local level. For San Jose residents, this meeting will be excellent preparation for urging the City Council Members to adopt a CCE - the single biggest action any city can take to lower its carbon emissions.
The event is free—we just ask that you kindly RSVP here. And feel free to invite your friends—the more women the merrier. :)
