“What’s missing is a sense of urgency, the sense that you, as a single person, can make a difference. If you’re trying to get the city council to pass a resolution to oppose a new pipeline, tying a personal story to the threat is essential. We’ve had moms in Virginia who experienced flooding regularly, whose children have to wade through thigh-deep water to get to school. We have moms whose kids have terrible asthma. Climate change felt like this abstract threat. Those stories helped people realize: It’s here.”
